A couple of Sunday’s ago, the reader in my village church was giving the sermon. She is an mature widow, and she said something that unfortunately demonstrates a grave problem in some parts of the Church of England and other churches. She said that she thought it was a great shame that the early church… Read more »
DaBunking Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code and other Conspiracy Cons.
One sub-species of ‘Bible-Bashing’ in the alternative sense I use it are those who say – in one form or another – that the bible and the church are deliberate fabrications or distortions of history, and that the ‘real’ Jesus, or the ‘real’ early church was very different to that which is taught in mainstream history or bible seminaries and the like. From pagans or atheists who try and claim that Christianity was an invention of Roman imperialists centuries later (or even before) the time of Jesus, for the purpose of control, to New Agers claiming the legacy of the gnostic gospels by saying ‘enlightened’ Gnosticism was the original, overturned and oppressed by an ideological revolution (or counter-revolution) at the time of Constantine, and suppressed since then; from claims from JW’s and various Unitarian cults, some Jewish apologists and extremes of the Messianic Jewish movement or Protestantism that claim historic Christianity is a pagan concoction or a corruption of the true faith by a devilish Vatican, to Muslim claims that the Bible was corrupted to hide prophecies of the coming of the Islamic prophet, conspiracy theories and ridiculous revisionist programs abound. Many of the spores of such views seep into general circulation and crop up in all sorts of circumstances. Some years back, I wrote an unpublished book, ‘Da Vinci Da-Bunked’ which focused on the claims about the alleged corruption of Jesus’ message and movement in the early centuries of the Christian era. The truth is that the early church had a huge emphasis on maintaining the tradition of the apostles, and there is no room for the kind of massive manipulation that all such conspiracy cons require, and so expounding the truth in refuting one of them goes a considerable way to refuting pretty much all variants of these conspiracy cons. You can ask to buy PDF’s of the book (I may get it properly published sometime soon), but I will also post articles as and when that deal with such claims.
